Can I go home now?

Let me out!

What is this cage thing all about?

I saw my family by the gate.

They must have left me by mistake!

The weeks go by.

She's still alone.

"Tell me, what did I do wrong?

Was I not good enough to love?"

"You said with you I would be safe!

You said with you I'd found my place!

I will be faithful till I die,

Come back for me and let me try!"

Her big brown eyes

Look out at passers by

As she reaches out a paw that no one holds

Her head falls

She's all alone.

But she knows that if she's good,

They will come for her one day.

And she knows that if she smiles,

They will come to her and say

"Little one, let's take a walk,

You will find a home with me"

But people come and go

And no one seems to see.

A man walks up

unlocks the door

Could he be the one she's waiting for?

She can't see the needle in his hand.

He takes a breath

And takes her paw

"I'm sorry we can wait no more,

"I'm sorry things must end this way.

I'm sorry girl, today's your day"

Her big brown eyes

Can't see the reason why.

As she reaches for this man who was her friend

A tear falls

Is this the end?

Then a child runs to her cage,

"Mummy look, this one is mine"

And with one lick upon her face

Says "I will be your friend for life"

A sad tale

A happy end

The needles packed away

The vet smiles to himself

"Not this dog, not this day!"

And she knew if she was good,

They would come for her that day,

And she knew that if she smiled,

They would come to her and say

"Little one, now you are loved,

You have found your family"

But in the cage next door,

Is another no one sees.
