We received a phone call from a vet clinic. Would we be interested in taking on a 5 month old Poodle X called Harry who had a probable porto systemic shunt? PSS is known as Liver Shunt.
Most RWL supporters would be aware we have dealt with dogs with Liver Shunt before in Bella and Moe. Both had surgery. Both lead happy lives, thankfully, as their shunt was an external one, outside the liver, which occurs more in small breeds, and is the one that can be surgerically corrected.
This little boy is extremely emaciated due to his condition, but has loveliest nature. And here's the kicker. Harry, has been sitting in a petshop window since 8 weeks of age, and didn't thrive. Yes, born from a puppy farm, sold to a petshop, he never thrived, and has waited his entire life - only for it to be discovered he cannot be sold.
So, where do we go with Harry? Straight to the specialist. Harry's surgery is going to be a massive $3000. *gulp* eyes watering. After Bailey, and Bonnie, and Matilda, all I can say is I hope the Trash and Treasure is going to be a good one! But we will be fine. And so will Harry. He will have an ultrasound next week, and then we take it from there. We find out if his shunt is outside his liver (please lets hope it is). If it's not, then we care for him as we can, for as long as we can, for the quality of life he will have.
Harry weighs just over 3 kgs. Yes he's a feather. But we hope, that we can give him his best chance at a new life. It's not without a degree of worry or stress, but Harry has only us to help him. So that is what we will do. Welcome Harry. We're just wild about you honey..............
Any assistance towards Harry's care would be greatly appreciated.
