Prahran pet shop puts up puppy debate

Business27 Jul 10 @ 07:00am by Ainsleigh Sheridan

A PRAHRAN pet shop is biting back at reports it says mislead the public on puppy purchases. Pets Wonderland managing director Mikaela Lewis said recent articles in a Melbourne daily newspaper had “basically said to boycott puppies from pet stores as we all buy from puppy farms”.

“Puppy farms are a disgrace and an end should be put to that (but) I think there’s a division between the hobbyists - who have one or two dogs - and registered breeders, and puppy farmers,” Ms Lewis said.

“I view (puppy farms) as a huge-scale operation, whereas breeders will have a couple of litters a year.”

She said her business, family-run since 1972, took pups from mostly local private breeders and had Toorak’s Village Vet Rod Graham check their health and socialisation in a two-week quarantine before sale.

General manager John Leptos said the pups were also microchipped, vaccinated and wormed before sale. The shop allowed the return of pups within three days should a problem, such as an allergy, arise.

“We’re reputable; we exceed the rules and regulations,” Mr Leptos said. “We have strict guidelines before we let an animal out of our shop. We do not want to be lumped into what may be happening out there.”

But RSPCA spokesman Tim Pilgrim said there was no guarantee a puppy bought from a pet shop came from a reputable breeder. “People should be meeting the parents and visiting the facility the dog is born in,” Mr Pilgrim said.

“There need to be regulatory codes of practice put in place and at the moment they aren’t stringent enough and aren’t enforced. Until that happens, there’s just no guarantee that if you buy a pet from a pet shop that it won’t be sourced from a breeder who is unethical.”

Pet shops needed to join the debate to find a solution to close down mass-breeding facilities, Mr Pilgrim said.

The question would be to the people at Pets Wonderland is why registered breeders would NEVER sell their animals to a petshop, so are they backyard or unregistered Breeders who are supplying this shop?

And only one or two litters a year?  That would indicate only one female.  Do breeders normally only breed from one bitch?  And two litters a year?  Females have two cycles.  They can be in pup twice a year, so I suggest they put their money where their mouth is and NAME their breeders if they are so above board....:D

You can send them an email if you like.....here are their details...

And to follow things up, I have contacted Ainsleigh Sheridan, the Editor of the Stonnington Leader with photos of the three girls from the puppy farm we just put in care.  I hope to get an article  showing the public the real issue, and that is those forgotten, still leading lives of hell, and watch the people in the petshops come up with something else to deny they are involved in supporting puppy milling.  Fingers crossed.

"Hobbyists"? I think not. Backyard Breeders who breed for greed is the correct term.

Private breeders/ hobbyists- A hobby is stamp collecting or painting model airplanes, something that you do in your 'spare time', as an addition to 'every day living'! Not breeding dogs to make a 'profit!
However i feel ,many 'hobbyists' are uneducated and this may be the problem, not just greed. Many years ago I myself felt that my girl had to mate to allow her to feel the 'joy of motherhood' and have one litter of pups before getting desexed (thank god it did not work).
I also did not know of the complications that could arise in undesexed dogs. EDUCATION!!!!!
Yes Tim Pilgrim codes of practice- but taken seriously and enforced!!!!

Sorry John, you will be ""...lumped into what may be happening out there."' unless you can conclusively PROVE your dogs come from reputable breeders. I bet you cant and wont want to.

Its time you stopped selling puppies if you have any consideration for
the mothers the breeders use. They suffer to supply your shop.

The 3 breeding dogs RWL took in last night have been subject to
horrible cruelty, flea infested, terrible matting and filth, decayed teeth, infected eyes and in fear for their lives because they have been in pens, probably all their lives, never groomed, handled, comforted.Just had their pups taken away and the mothers discarded when they are no
longer useful.

Nothing is worth this, nothing. And it is for greed. Everyone in the supply
chain should be condemed, there are no excuses for this trade anymore.

Thanks Allison....breed for greed is exactly what it is.

Just a clarification on an earlier post...I refer to a 'hobbyist',but meant a person who is really and trully uneducated in regards to breeding their dog and doing what they think is in their dogs best interest (i.e. as a younger person i was told that it was better for a females health to have one litter before desexingg....soooo not true!!!! )
I agree with all the above statements.........Greedy, disgusting and so should not be happening.
Mary you are right, there is no excuse for the trade anymore.....Now that people are becoming educated it is blatant greed that allows this practice to continue....
Well said everyone !!!!!

If a pet shop can't provide proof of reputable breeders and if you can't meet the parents of the puppy, then they are likely supporting animal cruelty. A pet store that cares about it's pets, will not sell undesexed puppies and would sell/support shelter puppies/dogs.

they have an advert on gumtree melbourne at the moment selling a litter of cross breed pups. in the ad they state they dont support puppy farms. backyard breeders are simply small scale puppy farms as far as im concerned. everytime i read the ad i laugh at how ignorant it is, and then i cringe when i realise what these people probably dpnt even care anyways :(
