LDH posts record number of adoptions in February 2010

The Lost Dogs Home have entirely missed the point again.

Boasting to the public they have had a record number of adoptions in February 2010 in comparision to 2009.  You can click on the link and watch a Youtube video of all the dogs finding new homes.

What is so astounding is this.

Why has there been a jump of 84% in adoptions for that month?  And the month prior?

The LDH seem to think this is something they should be proud of.  Indeed it is not. It does nothing more than highlight the poor sheltering techniques that have been employed, by the same people, sadly for more than two decades.  Why do you think these adoption rates have suddenly after 20 years jumped so significantly?

Would it be because the public are speaking out?  The negative publicity they have been receiving more the last few months? Or is it a genuine attempt to rehome more dogs?

Hardly.  There is no reason to think that without the public speaking out, and their own staff, that they would actually change what they have been doing for so many years.  It is definitely the criticism they are receiving for their poor efforts.

The RSPCA ACT's youtube Stateline Program just highlights even more how ineffective and backward the Lost Dog Home is.

No doubt there will be token changes coming over the next few months.  The Pet Licence.  A new website.  A few more dogs up for adoption.  Gee, what next an inhouse foster care program and volunteers pictured patting the dogs on their website?

Whatever small changes are coming the effects are bandaid only.  The mindset has not changed.  The reaction is merely kneejerk as there is no belief from Management that a pound should be run in any other way other than impound, reclaim, adopt a few to keep the public sweet and kill the rest.

They have had 20 years or more to declare they will go towards No Kill and haven't. It won't be happening with this management in place, of that we are assured.

If the LDH can increase their adoptions for the last two months, we will be watching and will expect it to be the standard and will not stop hounding them until it is.
This is 76 more adoptions than Feb 2009, so we know that at least that many more lives have been saved. We can only imagine how this must be improving staff moral and thank them for the great job they are doing.

I watched the Stateline program and felt heartened the media had
highlighted how all shelters can be improved and work towards being No Kill facilities.
I have heard Michael Linke speak of the changes he made in the RSPCA
ACT and how it has grown into such a success and a community resource, where staff remember the old days of killing, to now where they are happy and focused to saving as many lives as possible, and they have so many more volunteers willing to work there.

He did this by believing all the animals deserved a another chance, and that is what we keep going on about, relentlessly, because we know it is possible. Other shelter managers have accomplished this too, so can the LDH if they have new ideas and energy, and new management.

When Michael took over in the ACT finances were not good but he started saving lives IMEDIATELY, he also started new services, increased funding opportunities, DOUBLED the income in 4 years, and TRIPLED membership. They now have the highest rehoming rate in Australia currently. They also have more volunteers and a fostercare project for the animals needing more intensive care. All rehomeable dogs and cats stay until they find a home. All that from little money, burnt out staff fed up with killing rehomeable pets, and a culture of negativity like our Lost Dogs Home has.

What does the LDH have? A lot of money, millions in fact. They have staff
wanting change, Sue Conroy and Graeme Smith know how to make the changes, and they have many, many rehomeable dogs and cats who unfortunately end up there.

Time to stop the 'convenience kills'. Graeme and Sue....If you cant be inspired and see the possibilities that Michael Linke has, and with all your money, then you are just holding up progress.
Since you have had community pressure on you, you have increased adoptions so you have proved to everybody that it is possible. I wonder how 'inconvenient' that has been for you.

What was the kill rate?

This is well and truly hidden. .How many animals actually went through the doors? And of those, how many actually came out ALIVE? Sue and Graeme NEED to answer that before they pat themselves on the back.

This is the PR machine again trying their best to continue to bluff the donors and public.

Thanks again to the staff who contine to do a marvelous job.

If the LDH can show us how many adoptions took place, they can also show us how many dogs died there. There will be no celebration until we know the true picture. Where are the statistics on the LDH website?

Interesting to note that this is the first animal welfare postion of the CEO of the RSPCA (ACT)
It shows that what is required to make these amazing changes is 'vision' something that is sadly lacking by those in charge at the LDH. They have been in their comfortable positions for far too long, have no vision and absolutely no idea on how to bring the facility into the present, even with the huge resourses that they have available to them.

All I can say is what have you been doing there for the last 20 years?
Why the sudden rush to show off the adoption rate? We know that you've had the money to improve the adoption rates so many years ago.
Has panic set in, the fact that your own staff know what you've been up to and have brought it to the public?
This had better not be another stunt because we will be watching your every move and the press will certainly hear about it if you go back to your old ways.
I would also ask where the statistics are from your website, they are certainly well over due.

If Management had been doing their job property there would be no need to blow their trumpet - high adoptions would happen as a normal occurrence.

If the Management really enforced the current "empty" words on their website, and it was actually happening, why would such issues be an event?

It is because Management have failed so badly and are now afraid their donors will find out the truth so they make a big noise. Go to the RSPCA ACT and find out how its done .

The staff at the LDH know how its done, let them run the LDH and see what they will achieve.
